Chilli Crab, Chicken Rice and Chwee Kueh: How Singapore’s Food Obsession Spills Over into Books

SAT 21 june – 4.30PM
NAFA CAMPUS 2 ROOM 3-05 (LEVEL 3)

Singaporeans’ love for food is legendary, and it’s no surprise that our books are bursting with mouth-watering Singapore delights! Our panel of authors will share how they use food to weave stories of tradition, family, connection, and cultural identity, all while celebrating the tastes that bring us together. From hawker stalls to home kitchens, discover how food is more than just fuel – it’s a gateway to belonging and understanding.

sPEAKERS & MODERATOR

Joyce Chng

Joyce Chng lives in Singapore. They write science fiction and fantasy as well as YA and MG. Their short stories have appeared in The Apex Book of World SF II, The Future Fire and Multispecies Cities. Oyster Girl (Pepper Dog Press) is a tribute to their grandmother and the hawker heritage in Singapore. You can find Joyce at https://awolfstale.wordpress.com or blackwolfsings at Instagram.

Janice Khoo

Janice’s first book, Sing a Song of Hawker Food, is a collection of fractured nursery rhymes that pay tribute to Singapore hawker culture. She did a lot of research for the book and has eaten every hawker dish mentioned in it more than once. Janice co-wrote Sing a Song of Hawker Food and The Emperor’s Gazillion New Clothes with children’s author Lianne Ong. Besides retelling childhood favourites, Janice also wrote Shelby and Mona, a charming picture book about a snail, a butterfly and friendship.

Rachelyn Gordon (Moderator)
