Despite their relative success, why are there so few board books for the very young? Is there a future for board books? We put the question to authors Ben Lai of I Can/We Can and Fleur Mary Vella of Afternoon Tea at Raffles Hotel, alongside moderator Ethos Books publisher Ng Kah Gay, who published the latter book, as they share their experiences of writing and publishing these titles and the prospects for the future of board books.

Ben Lai
Ben Lai is a toy designer by day and a picture book creator by night, blending design and play into his creations. For Ben, play isn’t just an activity; it’s a joyful way of life. With a passion for picture books, he also delights in solving problems with a dash of art, a pinch of design, and a whole lot of play. His delightful books, “I Can” and “We Can”, have both been shortlisted for the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award.

Fleur Mary Vella
Fleur is from the Australian bush but has lived for the past 14 years with her husband and three children in Singapore. Fleur makes the shared experience of reading aloud to her children an integral part of her daily routine. She enjoys seeking joy in the everyday and likes nothing more than soaking up a lovely picture book with a hot cup of tea.
