The Whimsical World of Middle Grade Fiction

Three award-winning and best-selling authors, Hassan Ali of the Zac Rushd series, Low Ying Ping of the Mount Emily series and Vivian Teo of the My BFF is an Alien series, create worlds with talking animals and so much more for readers of middle grade fiction. Join us alongside moderator Hwee Goh to discover their inspiration, method and motivation.


sPEAKERS & MODERATOR

Low Ying Ping

Low Ying Ping is the author of two middle-grade fantasy series, Mount Emily and Prophecy of the Underworld. She has also written a three-volume English adaptation of the Chinese classic, Journey to the West, for younger children. Her books have won the Singapore Book Awards and were shortlisted for the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award and the Popular Readers’ Choice Award.

Hassan Ali

Hassan Hasaa’Ree Ali is a Registered Nurse and is currently working as a nursing lecturer. Hassan was a graduate of the National Arts Council Mentor Access Project under the mentoring of Singaporean author Mr. Anuar Othman. Hassan won the 2011 Golden Point Award (Malay Short Story) with his story titled ‘Homeostasis’. Two of Hassan’s short stories collection were shortlisted for the 2014 & 2018 Singapore Literature Prize. Hassan is a recipient of the Promising Award from The Malay Language Council, Singapore (MBMS) 2015 and Hadiah Sasterawan Muda MASTERA 2017. His latest work is published in 2019 was The Adventures of Zac Rushd: Cincin Bimasakti, an urban fantasy story for young readers set in Singapore and a parallel fey realm called Di-Antara (The world in between).

Vivian Teo

Vivian Teo worked as a financial journalist and editor for fourteen years at major US and UK trade publications. She became a freelance writer to spend more time with her two daughters and to write about things close to her heart. This led to My BFF Is an Alien, her first middle grade series. Sabotage, the second book of the series, was shortlisted for the 2022 Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award (middle grade category) and a finalist in the Best Young Persons Title category in the 2021 Singapore Book Awards. Books in the series have also been nominated in the POPULAR Readers’ Choice Awards’ English (Children) category, with the first book winning third place in 2020.

Vivian now enjoys writing about parenting, education, social and financial issues for various media and blogging on her own parenting/lifestyle website, The Stuff Childhoods Are Made Of, at vivianteo.com.

Hwee Goh (Moderator)

Hwee was classically trained at the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, and was a TV journalist and Editor at Channel NewsAsia, before extending her writing to children’s books. Hwee is known on the #bookstagram circuit and regularly interviews international bestselling authors on tour through Singapore. She works at The Media Consultants Singapore, lending her media and editorial skills to c-suite clients and leaders.
