Children’s books that explore Singapore’s history, heritage, and traditions provide a window into our past and celebrate our diverse communities. But with children today constantly bombarded by TikTok and short-lived trends, how do authors keep young readers from yawning the minute they hear the word “heritage”? The panel explores the challenges of making stories relatable for young readers, while ensuring the stories remain authentic.

Quek Hong Shin
Quek Hong Shin is a Singaporean freelance author and illustrator whose works include picture books like The Amazing Sarong, The Brilliant Oil Lamp, and Chou Chou. He has been nominated three times for The Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award, and The Incredible Basket, published by Epigram Books, was the winner of Best Children’s Book at the 2019 Singapore Book Awards. Grandma’s Tiger, written by Alan John and illustrated by Hong Shin is on The White Ravens 2023, an international recommendation list of children’s literature and winner of the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award (Picture Book Category) 2024.

Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar
Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar is an editorial consultant and translator. She is a published author of nine books for children, two of which have been translated. She has led workshops and sharing sessions on translating, writing and publishing.

Valerie Pereira (Moderator)
Valerie Pereira is the author of the Celebrations in Singapore series published by Epigram Books. She also wrote the picture book “Go Shanti Go” with her sisters that encourages readers to dream big. Her passion for writing stories was ignited by her desire to preserve special moments in time through picture books.
